MOVING MUSIC

COLLABORATIVE CREATIVE PROJECT // 2024

International / Interdisciplinary Artistic Exchange

THE MOVING MUSIC PROJECT consists of twelve short and stylistically varied musical miniatures composed and produced by Brian Ledwidge Flynn, independently interpreted by a diverse group of Twenty-One Dancers & Choreographers from a multitude of different countries and cultures including CANADA, ENGLAND, GERMANY, GREECE, ITALY, NIGERIA, POLAND, PORTUGAL, SOUTH AFRICA, SOUTH KOREA, TAIWAN, UGANDA and the USA.

In early 2024 I reached out to artists in the field of dance and presented interested parties with twelve unnamed musical miniatures I composed [Movements I – XII]. They were invited to perform, at their complete liberty, an original dance piece for whichever movement(s) they chose. The various twelve movements and the accompanying interpretations the artists performed and filmed by the dancers & choreographers can be found below in addition to a biography and artist statement from every participant.

A large video piece entitled 'MOVING MUSIC' will be released in Autumn, 2024. This work will visually combine multiple interpretations of the same movements by different dancers/choreographers in order to explore the synchronicities that occur between different kinetic artists when independently interpreting a piece of untitled music in different points of time and space. The instances where the actions of the dancers appear to interact with one another may suggest an underlying unity of human perspective that transcends differences in technique, study, culture and personality.

My intention with the piece 'MOVING MUSIC' was to leave as much freedom as possible for the collaborating choreographers and dancers in their interpretation of the pieces, including which of the untitled movement(s) they chose. I am as fascinated by the synchronicities that occur within the different performances as much as I am intrigued and enthralled by the scope of the variation and inventiveness.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all dancers/choreographers and filmmakers for participating in this enthralling and inspiring collective artistic exchange.

Isabelle Bock

GERMANY

"My vision is to form a dance collective to work on community projects that link sociopolitical topics (justice, solidarity, boundaries…) with performing arts."

"Hi, my name is Isabelle. I’m a 27-year-old psychologist and cultural studies student from Germany, based in Berlin. In 2019, I discovered my passion for contemporary dance theatre which I would like to share with others. After having been in Peru for three months for a theatre and dance project at a school in Lima, I am currently doing further training in dance choreography and pedagogy as well as I am dancing in the Impala Dance Company in Berlin. “Dance is the hidden language of the soul”, Martha Graham once said, and I believe that via diving into the language of dance we can overcome all that separates people from each other."

Marta Crocamo

ITALY

“My goal in my work was to let my body be moved by the music instead of dancing to it”

My name is Marta and I’m an Italian dancer currently based in Germany. I grew up in a small city near Milan and started dancing at a very young age. Through my childhood I encountered many teachers that open new views and possibility of a career in dance. In 2020 I moved to Basel, Switzerland to attend the three-years vocational training at Ballettschule Theater Basel, where I graduated in July 2023. After my formation in Switzerland, which focused on classical ballet, I decided to pursue my studies at DART DSP, Berlin in order to expand my knowledge of contemporary dance and become more versatile adding up to the technique I built in the past years. During this time I worked with different well-known choreographers of the current dance scene such as Richard Wherlock, Craig Davidson, Irate Ansa and Igor Bacovich (Metamorphosis dance), Joy Ritter Alpuerto and Anton Lachky. My interest in art is not limited to dance, in fact I love when more art forms come together in a performance to give life to something more powerful. As an example, I joined a performance by Issac Chong Wai during Art Basel 2022 which focused on the communicative power of simple movements. I am always looking forward to getting inspired by artists around me and to continue developing my personality as a dancer.

Isaac Euler

USA

"My work is centered around musicality and interpreting emotional expression into movement."

Isaac Euler is a multi-disciplinary dancer and circus artist living in Vermont. Combining varied schools of movement into an exploration of the whimsical and raw, Isaac's work wrestles with what it means to feel comfortable in a body and the big feelings that come with it. These yawning concepts are expressed through the weaving of improvised scores and choreographed phrases, with plenty of reminders to be silly once in a while.
Also an accomplished teacher, Isaac has been sharing the joy of dance and circus with kids and adults since 2017.
Isaac's most recent dance work, a clown-filled original cabaret titled The Barbara & Barbara Show, premiered last March at Bennington College as the foundation of Isaac's senior thesis.
